The Most Asked Questions
About How Ting Works
How does Ting detect frozen pipe risk?
Ting uses indoor temperature readings from your existing Ting sensor along with local weather conditions and power status. If indoor readings drop unusually low, or if a power outage lasts over an hour while it’s freezing outside, Ting will send you a frozen pipe alert.
How will I be notified if there is a risk of frozen pipes?
You’ll receive an app notification, a notice on your Ting app home screen, plus an SMS text and an email. That way, you’ll see it right away and can act quickly. We’ll continue to notify you at regular intervals until you’ve taken action in the app or when conditions improve and the risk has subsided.
What should I do if I receive a frozen pipe alert?
Simply open your Ting app and tap ‘Take action’. You’ll find a few simple steps to help reduce your home’s risk. If you’re away, we recommend contacting a neighbor or nearby family member and walk through the steps with them.
Are frozen pipe alerts part of Ting’s fire prevention service?
This feature is available for Ting customers with an active Ting sensor. The alerts work alongside Ting’s fire prevention service to give you more ways to help protect your home. Fire hazard detection and mitigation remain our top priority.
Why do so many homes experience frozen pipes each winter?
Extreme cold and winter weather events such as polar vortexes can catch even the most prepared homeowner off guard, especially in parts of the country where freezing temperatures are rare. Once the temperature drops, a home’s risk can rise quickly. Taking steps early helps reduce the chance of pipes bursting and costly water damage. That’s why we built this value-added feature into your Ting service.
