Few people think that laptop power supplies can cause devastating electrical fires. While not a common occurrence, they can – and do.
Few people think that laptop power supplies can cause electrical fires. But they can. The risk of a power supply failure to operate normally is not as uncommon as you might think.
Have you ever noticed how warm they can get? Laptop power supplies work hard to feed the increasing energy demands of computers. And with our COVID-19 pandemic reality, many of us are asking even more of our laptops and keeping them plugged in 24/7.
Fortunately, Ting doesn’t just identify wiring problems inside of walls and ceilings that can lead to fires.
For example, Ting recently identified laptop power supplies that were exhibiting clear electrical arcing fire hazards – in 2 different homes. The good news is that the hazards were caught early. A simple and inexpensive replacement of the power supply is all that was needed by both families to prevent a potential fire (and a reminder not to keep them plugged in all the time if you can avoid it!).
One of the best ways to minimize hazards from a charger (or the corresponding battery it is charging) is by unplugging it when the device is finished charging. But of course, this is not always practical. If you absolutely need to charge a device overnight, or if you need to step away for a spell, don’t place it under your pillow, on/in your bed, on a couch, or on other upholstered furniture, or in a location exposed to direct sunlight. As well, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and only use devices that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
Please be sure to keep an eye on all your computer power supplies, as well as power supplies for mobile phones and other electronics. If you’re still not convinced, take a minute to read this very unfortunate fire news story. And be sure not to overload your outlets!
Ting will remain on the job, working hard to keep you and your family safe from electrical fire hazards.
Staying in-tune and aware is important to help prevent issues and to maintain peace of mind. That’s why we developed the most significant advancement in electrical ‘awareness’ and fire safety for the home. It’s like having an electrician watching over your home 24×7.
